Product and Mold Analysis

During product design and development phases, one of the operations that our engineers will often perform is a mold flow analysis, a computerized analysis of a potential mold design for a product, and how a certain resin will interact with that mold as it is injected into the mold. Mold flow analyses are a crucial tool, one that allows us to identify problems in the product and mold designs before we cut steel.

The biggest advantage of mold flow analysis, and why we perform them, is its ability to identify potential problems in the part design. Different resins have different flow characteristics, and certain design features might impact how well the resin fills the mold cavity. Combined with our CAD software, we use Mold Advisor software to take a solid model of your product and turn it into a computer simulation of what happens to the resin in the mold during the injection cycle. We use the software to test both single and multi-cavity runner systems during mold tooling design, allowing us to examine and prevent potential problems before they can occur–without risking actual time and money

Injection molding is an extremely complicated process and requires significant planning and care to perform. A mold flow analysis allows us to simulate the process without wasting materials or time. We can experiment with different materials to see how well they’ll fill the cavities, examine gate placements for material flow, predict flow lines and areas of high-stress, as well as how a part will warp during cooling. The results of this analysis help us reduce defects, streamline manufacturing, and maintain a higher level of product quality. The mold flow analysis also allows us to optimize mold design, tooling, and production processes.
