Overmolding is a process that combines two or more material types or colors into a single part, either fully or partially immersing one material into another. Rather than creating the different parts separately and then joining them together, overmolding involves creating a single product from multiple materials all at once and getting the benefits of those materials.
This type of two-shot or multi-shot molding is a popular manufacturing technique when it comes to creating components or products for medical device and equipment applications. Medical device manufacturing often requires functional but complex components, ergonomic tools that need to be rigid but require softer grips for handling, or the ability to pack more functionality into a single part in order to streamline assembly processes.

It improves the performance of the finished product, including its shock and vibration resistance as well as chemical resistance, and often combines the beneficial properties of whatever materials are used to make it.
