Distinctive Plastics specializes in a wide variety of technical injection molding techniques, including in-mold decoration, or IMD-a way to decorate plastic components during the actual molding process. However, in-mold decoration does more than just add an appealing finishing touch-it allows manufacturers a timely and cost efficient way to create durable, lightweight parts for a variety of applications, functional and aesthetic. And because of this, it's a growing trend in automotive manufacturing, and quickly spreading to electronics and consumer products as well.

In-Mold Decoration or Metal Insertion: Getting a Chrome Look without the Cost or Weight

Metal inserts and metal components have long been a favorite choice for automotive manufacturing. However, IMD has grown more sophisticated-meaning that it can make lighter-weight, plastic components with similar benefits to metal components or metal inserts without the added weight.

For instance, at Distinctive Plastics (DPI) we can use IMD techniques to achieve appearances such as machined metal, chrome, or photo-quality graphics for client brands or other purposes. All of this decoration is done during the injection molding process reducing the need for secondary operations, coatings, and other finishing operations. Plus, we can give our customers a metallic look without the need for actually using metal. This allows our clients to get parts with, for example, a chrome look without the weight of metal or metal inserts-an especially useful trait in automotive interiors, where saving on weight means saving on fuel.

Another benefit of IMD is that we can use it to essentially coat or apply an additional layer to plastic parts during molding to get better physical properties, such as higher strength or improved abrasion and scratch resistance. Other properties like UV protection, weather resistance, or anti-fog characteristics (like those used on plastic lenses) could also be imparted through in-mold decoration. This helps with fading and damage, and reduces the need for touching up later on.
