Component assembly can be a time consuming and unexpected expense, and the more parts that make up the assembly, the longer that assembly will take. Multi-component molding from Distinctive Plastics (DPI) can help with that. At DPI, we specialize in a variety of technical injection molding techniques including 2-shot molding, that offers several advantages, especially when it comes to streamlining assembly and inventory.
Two-shot molding is an injection molding technique where two types or colors of material are molded at the same time or one type of plastic is molded over another within a single mold. This can involve multiple different combinations:
No matter the actual combination, the entire process takes place within a single mold tool-meaning that a project that would typically require multiple mold cycles, secondary operations, and different mold tools, instead can be done in one cycle in a single machine.
2-shot molding is an excellent method for reducing component assembly times and inventory requirements because it essentially offers a way to complete part of the assembly without taking the component out of the machine. We also have our equipment set up to mold two parts made from the same material or different ones, and then robotically assemble them post-mold within the work cell.
This offers our customers several advantages:
Distinctive Plastics, Inc. has decades of experience in technical injection molding techniques including multi-component molding methods like 2-shot molding. We have experience with designing, mold tooling, and prototyping as well, and we'll work with your team to determine the best way to get the quality and precision you need while reducing the overall production costs.
